1. October 30-31
I DARE YOU TO WRITE YOUR OWN
PRAYER(BOOK)
The Talmud enables, empowers and ennobles
each person to be a creative master of communication with God. The Sages of the
Talmud are our inspiration. Before we change the siddur, before we add or
drop prayers, lets look at tractate Brachot (in English) for some
insights.
2. December
18-19 (Second Shabbat of
Chanukah)
A LOOK INTO THE MIRACLE AND THE
MILITARY VERSIONS OF CHANUKAH
We
will look into the Book of Maccabees for its account of the holiday and compare
it to the way the Rabbis read it into the prayerbook!
3. Postponed:
Jan
29-30 (Tu B’Shevat)
DO THE HOKEY POKEY!
Right foot in, left foot out, shake it all
around... Jewish body language from
the "shukel" to "will you please rise"; from bending
to bowing; from holding tzitzit together to kissing (just about
anything!!). A delightful look at Jewish body movement.
4. March 26-27
(Shabbat Hagadol)
THE AMAZING AKIVA:
The
seven weeks from Pesach to Shavuot has an overarching tinge of sadness. Akiva's
yeshiva boys die in huge numbers. Find out
more about Akiva. Ignorant but not stupid; shepherd to student; scholar and
Torah lover; passionate husband to Rachel but busy with God's Words; Messianic
dreamer and Rosh Yeshiva; devoted leader and role model to Jewry for
centuries after. Lessons of his life from Talmudic evidence.
5. May
7-8 (Before Shavuot)
SHAVUOT AIN'T JUST ABOUT TORAH
FROM SINAI: GOOD MANNERS IS JEWISH TOO!
Jewish
tradition incorporates the principle of derekh
eretz as
vital as the rituals of life cycle and holy days.
It is the every day etiquette, refinement, propriety, correct behavior
which has Torah roots. A look in to Torah examples you may never have thought of
before...and a Talmud text too.
